6 Steps To Make A Crayon Sgraffito

Step 1

Gather your basic materials for a crayon sgraffito:

  • DARK AND LIGHT COLORED WAX CRAYONS
  • PENCIL
  • PAPER OR CARD STOCK
  • SCRATCHING  DEVICE (such as a paper clip or toothpick, etc.)
  • OLD TOOTHBRUSH (clean up particles)

Step 2

Sketch your design onto the paper with pencil as a guideline. (The object is to made a crayon drawing in light crayon colors, cover with a dark contrasting crayon and scratch through the dark layer to reveal the light colors underneath).

Step 3

First Layer: Fill in areas with heavy thick light crayon colors including white, also sign your name with a light colored crayon or pencil.

Second Layer: Cover entire surface with contrasting (dark) crayon.

Step 4

Scratch
or scrap the entire surface to reveal under color but don't remove all the texture. Be mindful of your scratch patterns.

Step 5

Brush away any crayon dust with an old toothbrush. It's only wax crayon but cleaning up as you go helps.

Step 6

Your art is ready for framing or matting or stretching or mounting. Don't forget to take a picture for your records. Congratulations! and thanks for following along and learning something new today.
