Less is More! Simply making a clear crisp statement is more powerful than Including a bunch of detailed clutter. My semi abstract shapes are simplified from what I find in nature. Here everything kept simplified but you can still recognize a farmhouse, power pole and trees with foliage.
I love to contract colors, shapes and textures. Variety invites interest. These honey locust tree blossoms show light and dark contrast and texture.
Making a single clean mark is much more enjoyable to look at than making a fussy confusion with sketchy scratchy marks. It also produces a clear message to help communicate what I am saying.
Great for texture and excitement. Useful for color contrast against solid passages. I love to use color in my speckles and splashes but even black or a single gray tone has magic to add to my artwork.
Sometimes layers can say more than a simple statement. I first started using this idea of layering, by painting over old or failed works. When marks and colors show through they add to the finished art in a good way.
Color is important and of great interest. I like to work with color families, color contrasts and color harmonies.
